Autism Acceptance Day

Join us for a special show for Autism Acceptance Day! Paula C. Durbin-Westby will be with us discussing the importance of acceptance and how it affects the lives of autistic people. Paula is the Program Coordinator for the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) and was on a panel for the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC).

This day is significant because it is at the beginning of Autism Awareness Month and lets the world know that we need something much more powerful than just awareness...we need acceptance!

Ari Ne'eman and the Opposition to CDC's Proposed Additions for a Wandering Behavior Diagnostic Code

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has proposed the addition of a new diagnostic code to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision for wandering behavior. A variety of disability advocacy and professional organizations including the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, The Arc, TASH, National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services, National Disability Rights Network, are worried about the potential unintended consequences that may emerge from a medical diagnostic code for wandering behavior.  Ari Ne'eman, President of ASAN will join us on AWN Radio to explain these concerns in detail.

Jane Strauss - Just Your Average Autistic Family on AWN Radio

Jane offers her support and expertise to the autism community in many ways as an advocate as well as in her encouragement of others to use their talents for self-sustainability. iPads for Autism on AWN Radio

Join us as we welcome to AWN Radio two mother's whose autistic son's have had amazing experiences with the iPad.  Both Shannon Des Roches Rosa and Melody Latimer are advocates for he iPad and it's numerous accessories due to the technology proving to be a valuable resource for countless neurodiverse children, including their own young sons.   Melody continues to share with others the progress her son has made in the short time since he received his iPad this past Christmas, and Shannon has described her child's experience with his iPad as a "near miracle."  Show Times: 11am EST, 10am CST, 9am MST, 8am PST.  Please refer to the World Meeting Planner if you are outside the USA in order to confirm AWN

Join us on February 14th when AWN Radio welcomes to the show, Valerie Paradiz, PhD. Valerie is Director of Special Projects at the Autism Research Institute. She was diagnosed on the autism spectrum 7 years ago at the age of 40, and has much to share about being diagnosed with AS well into adulthood, the toll it took on her with respect to loosing jobs, and her attempts at relationships which seemed to inevitably fail. Valerie was married in 2010, and she will share with us on this Valentine's Day broadcast her story of how she found happiness, acceptance, and fell in love.
