Asperger Syndrome in the Media

It's not Rain Man, it's a SPECTRUM

Asperger Syndrome is a growing issue with children, as more and more are being diagnosed, and at earlier ages. Its acceptance has now become apparent in the media and how Aspergers and Asperger-like people are portrayed.

Having first hand experience with raising a child with Aspergers, you get to know the quirks of how your child operates. Not every Aspie is the same. They are described to be on a spectrum, ranging from one end to another (mild to severe) and how functional they are.

Primetime television in the last few years has introduced us a new group of TV characters who either have Asperger Syndrome or its characteristics. Whether you are a parent of an Asperger child, a sibling or a friend, you might recognize these following shows, which are making an attempt to portray aspie-like characters.

The Big Bang Theory is a wonderful show on CBS that documents the

Please Read: New Gender & Sexuality Discussion Board

Gender and Sexuality:  This is a supportive area to talk about, but is not limited to, GLBTQ issues regarding sexual identity, orientation, gender and other issues.

The area is open for those who are comfortable discussing these topics publicly, but we want to be supportive of everyone regarding this.

If you wish for a more private area, feel free to use the Sanctuary area, or contact us to set up a specific private area.

If you have any suggestions regarding this space, please contact us.

What is Personal Advocacy?

Hi guys! I wanted to let you know what this Section is and isn't for, and some rules specifically for this section (you should also adhere to the Forum Rules, of course.)

What Is Personal Advocacy?

Personal Advocacy is addressing the issues that you personally are facing. This covers a wide range of things, from issues with an IEP or other plan, to speaking up about your needs with your doctor or other service provider, to getting help navigating the legal system. For some people, it might even be as simple as learning how to tell a parent or other care giver what you need, or as complicated as escaping an abusive situation. Keep in mind that most of the people here are not lawyers, and that if you face legal issues you should contact a lawyer. You could ask for help finding a lawyer that deals with your specific issue, though, or help with navigating the justice and/or other systems, though!

Ari Ne'eman Appointed to the National Council on Disability

Written by Savannah Nicole Logsdon

Good News for the Autism community, and for the cross disability movement as a whole. Ari Ne'eman has been announced as one of President Obama's latest Presidential Appointees. He is currently awaiting confirmation by the senate for a position on the National Council on Disability. You can read the press release on the White House website here, as well as the names and Bios of other Appointees.

This is a big step forward for the Autism Community, particularly (but not exclusively) for the Neurodiversity movement. Ari has been pushing for the needs- and rights- of the Autistic community for years, and to have him appointed to the NCD is certainly the next move in his unrelenting efforts to promote our cause. He has also been involved in cross-disability efforts, an important thing to keep in mind.

Alphabet Soup

A lot of times people use abbreviations in advocacy, and this can get really confusing, especially when you are new to advocacy.

This thread is a place to share the different Abbreviations, What they Mean, and to Ask about any Abbreviations you are unfamiliar with. As we get more, I will add them to this post in alphabetical order.

What is Community Advocacy?

Hi guys! I wanted to let you know what this Section is and isn't for, and some rules specifically for this section (you should also adhere to the Forum Rules, of course.)

What Is Community Advocacy?

Community Advocacy is, of course, advocacy that you do in the community. This ranges from taking on an issue with a policy at the local school board to State level work such as sitting on a board or protesting in your state capital about a state policy. You are representing more than one individual with community advocacy, often in hopes of changing a rule or policy that effects the community in some way. Or you may be organizing a group of individuals on the same issue in order to speak out about a local issue.

What is not Community advocacy is a specific case, unless it is being used to organize around an issue. National level work is, for the convenience of this site, not included in this section. For more info on what does not go here, click here.

We Are All Part of One Spectrum

Written by Amy Sequenzia

"We are all equally distant from the sun, but we all have a share in it." -Thornton Wilder

I heard this quote and the first thing that came to my mind was “neurodiversity”. The second thing was simply “diversity”.

A lot is happening in the world, the good and the bad. A lot is happening in my life, mostly awesome things. The bad is that the seizures are still relentless.

Online, in the world of Facebook, my community came together to help someone - who most of us never met - raise funds to attend a conference that ranks high among Autistics. The fundraising effort still goes on, even though it took only two days to reach the goal. This was Neurodivergent K’ idea, she was giving back.

I thought about this quote by Tennessee Williams: “It is marvelous to be shattered by kindness”.

I was so proud of my community! Good things were happening to me and one big reason is the support and encouragement I receive every day.

Good things were happening to other Autistics because my community is inclusive and wants to hear from anyone who has something to say, anyone who wants to advocate for autism acceptance.

But then I heard it again. The division, the elitism, the functioning labels.

Hi! I'm Wulf!

New here, obviously! But not new to the organisation. I'm 25 and I am Autistic. I am also Dyscalculic, I have Sensory Processing Disorder, and am occasionally nonverbal and I also have alexithymia and topographical agnosia. All in all, I'm pretty neurodiverse. I'm from Hamilton, Canada and the status of my Autism has only been recently confirmed. I am looking forward to this journey on getting to know myself better and getting to know more Autistic women as well. Two of my best friends are also Autistic and my cousin's two year old son has just been diagnosed. Anyway, hi everyone! Looking forward to getting to meet you all!
